FAQ

Septic Questions, Answered

These are the questions we hear most often. If yours is not covered here, call (830) 822-4628 and we will be glad to help.

Getting Started

What do I need before you can install a septic system?

An approved permit from the county, which requires a site evaluation and a system design by a licensed site evaluator and a registered sanitarian or professional engineer. We will put you in contact with an engineer we trust for that work, or we can price and install from a design you already have. See the permit guide.

Do you design septic systems?

No. Texas requires designs to be prepared by a registered sanitarian or professional engineer, and we do not do design or engineering in house. We work with an engineer we trust and will put you in touch with them for the site evaluation and design. Then we install the system. See how septic design works.

Can you look at my lot before I buy it?

Yes. We can share what we observe on the property and what types of systems are typical nearby. A site evaluation by a licensed site evaluator is what ultimately determines the system.

What areas do you serve?

Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, Bulverde, Spring Branch and Blanco, as well as Startzville, Sattler, Fischer and Smithson Valley. See service areas.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold TCEQ On-Site Sewage Facility installer license OS0031132 and are fully insured.

Cost

How much does a new septic system cost?

Cost depends mainly on system type, rock and house size. Our cost guide lists typical ranges and explains each factor.

Why does rock matter so much?

Limestone has to be broken out with a hydraulic rock hammer, which takes considerably longer than excavating soil. On some lots it is the largest variable in the price.

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. Send us the property address and number of bedrooms, along with any design or permit you already have, and we will follow up promptly.

System Types

What’s the difference between aerobic and conventional?

A conventional system relies on deep soil to treat wastewater, while an aerobic system treats it in the tank with air and bacteria first. Read aerobic vs. conventional.

Why do most Canyon Lake homes have aerobic systems?

Shallow soil over limestone, slopes and proximity to water. Conventional drainfields require more soil than most lake-area lots have.

Is drip better than spray?

Drip is out of sight and performs better on slopes and small lots, while spray usually costs less to install. The design specifies which one fits the site. See drip systems.

The Installation

How long does installation take?

For a typical home, a few working days on site once the permit is issued. Rock, weather and inspection scheduling can add time.

Who schedules the county inspection?

We do, and we meet the inspector on site.

Will you clean up when you’re done?

Yes. We backfill, grade and clean up the work area so it is ready for sod or seed.

After the Installation

Do you pump tanks or do maintenance?

No, we don’t offer septic pumping; use a licensed pumping company. Texas also requires aerobic systems to be covered by a maintenance contract with a licensed maintenance provider.

My aerobic alarm is going off. What do I do?

Contact your maintenance provider. Their number is usually on a sticker inside the control panel. Limit water use until they have checked the system.
